The conductor is insulated with a thermoplastic material, namely polyethylene, which is a linear chain compound. After undergoing a special curing process, the linear chain is transformed into a cross-linked thermosetting structure. This material provides exceptional electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties, including excellent dielectric strength, higher continuous current rating, and superior resistance to thermal ageing.
High resistance to thermal deformation and the ageing property of XLPE cables provides higher continuous and short circuit current capacity of cable.
Current carrying capacity of the XLPE cable is about 30% higher than PVC cable of same size.
Permitinity of XLPE is 2.3 and that of PVC is 7.
XLPE has lower di-electric loss than PVC cables.
Charging current is considerably lower than PVC cable, which allow coarse setting of network protection system.
Can be loaded for higher current and long duration.
Because of cross linking, structure provides excellent resistance to ozone & heat.
Due to thermosetting, conversion exhibits better mechanical property over PVC.
Excellent mechanical feature provides protection against external effects. Resistance to acid & alkalies is excellent.
XLPE carries more current than PVC counterpart.
Due to low specific gravity of XLPE (0.90), cables are comparatively lighter in weight than PVC (1.35 – 1.55).
Due to low weight and less dimension, laying and corresponding accessories becomes cost effective.
